Piki Pod Tuakana-Teina with the Dream Team

Whakatauki-Proverb
"Ma te tuakana ka totika te teina, ma te teina ka totika te tuakana”
“From the older sibling the younger one learns the right way to do things, and from the younger sibling the older one learns to be tolerant”

What is it?
Royal Tangaere (1997) explains that “the concept of tuakana/teina is derived from two principles: whanaungatanga and ako”. Another way of looking at this is “where the notion of learning/teaching” is shared, and where the tutor is also learning in the programme” (Te Puni Kōkiri 2001).
Tuakana/teina refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person and is specific to teaching and learning in the Māori context. Within teaching and learning contexts, this can take a variety of forms:
  • Peer to peer – teina teaches teina, tuakana teaches tuakana.
  • Younger to older – the teina has some skills in an area that the tuakana does not and is able to teach the tuakana.
  • Older to younger – the tuakana has the knowledge and content to pass on to the teina.
  • Able to less able – the learner may not be as able in an area, and someone more skilled can teach what is required.

On Wednesday the Piki Pod made connections with their Tuakana-Teina partners. Thank you to Reef and Nina from the Dream Team who came and collected us. We played a game of 4 ball football. The Piki Pod are looking forward to building a relationship with the Dream Team and sharing our learning with them.

Vintage "Old" Cars

This morning the Piki Pod went for a ride in the vintage cars.  We counted wheels, headlights, compared the vintage cars with our cars today.  We had a blast driving around in the vintage cars.

Thank you Mahora Kindergarten

On Friday the Piki Pod visited Mahora Kindergarten.  We joined the children at Mahora Kindergarten for mat time.  We sung some new and old songs, had a turn with the musical instruments and listened to stories.  We had fun playing with our old friends and making new friends.

Nga mihi nui Mahora Kindergarten, we had a wonderful visit.  See you again.
